Philip Henry Sheridan was a lawyer and author. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1846. He served in the Mexican-American War, until being injured in Battle of Cerro Gordo. He joined the Army Corps of Engineers and was sent to Kansas Territory, where he participated in the 1855 Indian skirmishes at Pawnee Post and Council Grove
In November 1856, he was promoted to captain and assigned to Fort Leavenworth, where he became a clerk in the Commissary Department. In 1858 he resigned from the Army. In 1863 he joined the Union Army as a colonel with command of an infantry regiment, but his regiment was not sent into battle.
